Great Book - Answer to Steve Clark's Question Above!!!
Buy the book if you like slot machines. In answer to Steve Clark from England who wrote, "Could anyone tell me who invented slot machines? I know this is not the way to go about it but I can' find out about it any where else!" I found an excerpt that answers your question: "Nickel in the slot" machines first appeared in the mid-1800s and awarded cigars and free drinks. The first coin-operated counter-wheel machine was patented in 1892 by Gustave Schultz of San Francisco. So there you have it Steve! (And we still got our Cable Cars, Golden Gate Bridge, and Hookers!)

when did it all begin?
Could anyone tell me who invented slot machines? I know this is not the way to go about it but I can' find out about it any where else!

Fantastic book about the history of Slot machines.
A must have book for anyone interested in the entire history of Slot machine!

Soldier of the Legion

A perilous, exciting space saga
Book one of the "Beta 3" series, Soldier Of The Legion by Marshall S. Thomas is an epic science fiction novel. Set in the far-flung future, Soldier Of The Legion chronicles the struggles of a brave squad of Legionnaires who must fight to survive horrific battles against a corrupt, slave-raiding empire -- and a far worse force of inhumans. A perilous, exciting space saga, Soldier Of The Legion is enthusiastically recommended reading for fans of the science fiction action/adventure genre.

From MyShelf.com
Beta 3, called "Thinker," because others see his capacity to reason even though he has been trained to react instantly as a part of a military team, is sent with his detachment to Andrion 2 to secure the planet. He is part of "The Legion," an army sworn to protect to the death. And death is the price a soldier of the Legion must be willing to pay to defend the Confederation of Free Worlds against the "System." Although an uneasy truce exists between "ConFree" and the System, unusual activity on Andrion 2 leads the Legion to speculate about possible illegal actions from the "Systies." Thinker is part of a unit. Each soldier has a unique personality. Some, Thinker is convinced, are insane. But in the Legion, they are brothers. One mind - one heart - and one life.

The planet is inhabited by a people the soldiers refer to rather derisively as "Scalers." These people, actually called the "Taka," attack the Legion. But, when they are saved by the soldiers from the disgusting exosegs, horrible, deadly creatures that aren't supposed to be on Andrion 2, the Taka declare their loyalty to the Legion.

What is happening on the planet? Are the Systies there? How did the exosegs get to Andrion 2? Nothing makes sense. Thinker's sense of alarm is muted by his desire for another soldier, Priestess - and the conflict he feels when a past love from his training days on Planet Hell shows up and declares that she and Thinker are tied together for eternity. Where is his heart? Does it belong to Priestess or Valkyrie? Is this emotional battle compromising his ability to sense danger? Thinker needs all of his wits and training - because there is a surprise on Andrion 2. One more diabolic and dangerous than any of the soldiers have prepared themselves for.

SOLIDER OF THE LEGION is a deep, rich story that captures the heart of Sci-fi while bringing the elements of suspense, mystery, horror, and romance together and blending them into a perfect story that everyone will enjoy. Thomas's talent as a writer shines through the action, making the dialogue captivating, and in many passages, moving. His protagonist, Thinker, may be involved in a life that few of us have experienced, but Thomas keeps Thinker so human that we are able to experience the joy, the pain, and the fear that a soldier of the Legion endures while putting his or her life on the line without question.

I highly recommend SOLDIER OF THE LEGION, one the best books I've read this year! Watch for the next books in this exciting series!

Steps to Knowledge: Spiritual Preparationfor Humanity's Emergence into the Greater Community (New Knowledge Library)
Published in Paperback by New Knowledge Library (May, 1998)

More Direct than ACIM; Consistent with Urantia; Do the Steps
There are a number of companion volumes which point one in the direction of seeking contact with Knowledge (holy spirit). The 365 exercises, suggesting a daily curriculum, is like ACIM. They are less intellectual in wording, but powerfully take one down a path to connect with your own life. As I write this I am on step 231 "I have a calling in this world." The process is giving me a broader perspective on life and my place in it. An ACIM reader will recognize concepts, but Steps lead one to engagement in the world - not rejecting it as an illusion. In this respect it logically carries forward from The Urantia Book which ends with an empahsis on the life of Jesus as an example of how humans could live. Steps to Knowledge is a means of self-development within a greater community which is available to all. It is a way to find your small part and contribute to the world.

This book never ceases to amaze me.
This is book is a curriculum - a curriculum for living - a curriculum for Truth. Until I found this book and this teaching, I always felt that something was missing. Situations seem to arise in my life as a result of my practicing these steps and slowly I begin to see what I need to know or do to move on to the next phase of learning. It is peeling away the layers of error thinking and bringing a depth to my understanding that I have never experienced before. I've gone through it step by step at many different paces and each time an "issue" arises, the step I am on seems to be exactly what I need to know at that particular time. I highly recommend it.

Self Knowledge and Peace of Mind
These step by step meditation practices and lessons take me directly to Knowledge, my own authority. This has given me a way to live and a way to be at peace with myself.

A Wonderful read written by an exceptional lady
Suzanne Marshall takes you along on her journey through quiltmaking as though you are sitting down and listening to her in person. She graciously shares with us her first efforts at creating quilts,(her REAL "first" quilts). She reveals the judges remarks which are very helpful and revealing to those curious as to what judges are looking for in high caliber competitions. I especially enjoyed her husband Garland's remarks scattered throughout the book. This is an applique book that covers all the bases, instruction, "eye candy", and encouragement. I can't imagine anyone who would find this book a disappointment.

Wonderful! Even for non-quilters!!
Suzanne Marshall's book is a delight. Even for those of us who have never considered tackling a quilting project, this is a wonderful read. The lovely photographs and Ms. Marshall's informal style make this a winner!

Take a close look at this book
Anyone who has ever shyed away from applique should look closely at Suzanne Marshall's book Take Away Applique. Suzanne's clear step-by-step explanations could unlock the mysteries of this art form for you as it did for me. Her lovely naturalistic patterns, which include flowers, butterflies, caterpillars, hummingbirds, and many many other charming creatures, make practice a pure joy. Suzanne is an award winning quiltmaker who shares with us the judge's comments about her quilts. We get a close-up look at what judges look for and how "subjective" judging can be. I LOVE this book, the format is so friendly, honest, open and encouraging. With this book anyone can master applique adn learn to make beautiful quilts that will please and bring joy to the harshest of all quilt judges....yourself. Michelle Sargent

Advanced Nutrition and Human Metabolism
Published in Hardcover by West Publishing Company (January, 1999)
Authors: Huntgroff, Marshall, and Sara M. Hunt
Average review score:

Readable, in-depth discussion of nutrition and metabolism.
Currently, many people are becoming seriously interested in the role of nutrition in human health. Fortunately, there are many good books on nutrition and health for the interested lay person. But once one begins to understand the extreme importance of nutrition for achieving and maintaining good health where can a seriously interested lay person turn for more detailed information? The answer is to this book. Yes, this book requires some serious study, but it is quite well written and does not require a degree in chemistry or biology to follow. A dilligent lay person can gain much valuable information from it. If you are really serious about understanding the role of nutrition in human health I highly recommend this book.

The best advanced nutrition book I know.
If you want (or need) to go deep into nutrition, this is the book. Very well organized and researched information. Covers in depth nutritional physiology and biochemistry. I used this book in an advanced undergraduate nutrition course and I consider it one of my prized possessions. If there is a better book on the subject, I would like to know about it.

Best biochemical nutrition textbook!
I am a graduate student who majors in Nutrition. This is a best biochemical nutrition textbook I ever read! What I like about this textbook is: (1) relatively light weight (575 pages) for this type of textbook, yet very comprehensive. It contains from basic physiology and biochemistry to a current field such as antioxidant nutrition; (2) a large amount of well summarized figures (almost every page has al least one figure); (3) plain English; (4) each chapter concludes with annotated bibliography so that you could use this book as a sort of literature review on a specific field; (5) well-made index, so that you could use this as a sort of encyclopedia of nutrition. Title says "advanced", but I recommend this book to undergraduate students who look for explanation on the biochemistry basis in the nutrition field.

Adventures in Prayer
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Ballantine Books (June, 1990)
Author: Catherine Marshall
Average review score:

Remarkable discovery
I thought I knew how to pray until I read this book. It gave me so much peace and it helped me realise that if ever I have a problem and it worries me then I just have to turn the problem over to God. He can deal with it. I now appreciate people better and praying for other people is so easy and fulfilling. I now have a light spirit and I bless the lady who gave me the book to read.

Great book of prayer
This is one of the most helpful books on prayer I have ever read. Catherine Marshall demonstrates the magnificent simplicity of prayer and shares with her readers the truth in how to engage in several types of prayer including The prayer of Helplessness, The Waiting Prayer, and The Prayer That Helps Your Dreams Come True. Don't let the outdated cover deter you. It's as relevant as ever!

This Adventure~Prayer~So Simple
All of my Christian walk I've known about prayer; been a part of prayer-chains, prayed when I didn't know what else to do, and have even experienced answers to prayer. Deep in my heart I've always felt that there was something more. At times, I'd wonder, why pray if God is going to carry out His will anyway? How does prayer work or change anything? This book by Catherine Marshall was an answer to those cries of my heart. She has a gift in making things easy to read. Bringing our lofty ideas back to the simplicity of asking our Father for help. To be able to lay my heart, my desires, and even fears or frustrations out before Him and to know I'm not going to be turned away. That is what this book has done for me. In times past, when struggling, I may have even scorned the simplicity or prayer, but now because of Catherine's insight, it's that very humble simplicity I can see that I've needed all along. Does your son or daughter share with you their hopes, dreams and fears? Do they come to you when their struggling, and today they can't seem to keep their shoes tied? Are they older, do they ask for your opinion on which job they should take, or what kind of insurance should they get? Would you try to lead them astray or give them bad advice? Of course not! And that is part of the beauty of what Catherine Marshall has written here. She shows us how we being imperfect still desire to give our children our very best, how much more so, does our God, our creator, our Father want to give us that which is good for us and will bring Him glory. Her book, Adventures in Prayer, has helped me to see the cynical place my heart had come to concerning prayer. This book has rekindled a passion in me to draw near to my Lord again. And to know beyond a shadow of a doubt, that each time I come to Him in prayer, it's because I know He was pursuing me, wooing me, calling me to have communion with Him. How simple! How wonderful! That is why I've come to Amazon to order this book for several friends. When I shared with them some parts of this book, they immediately wanted to get the book. We have searched many book stores and Amazon is one of the only places I can find it available anymore. Thank you~

At the Hands of a Child
Published in Hardcover by Dimension Publications Inc. (19 October, 1997)
Authors: Alexis Storm, Dean Marshall, and D. Robert Wright
Average review score:

Great book of fiction but it could really happen
This book, At the Hands of a Child, is a great book for all adults. We live in our own world and never understand that an act of kindness can be used to destroy lives. The children who were used in this book never got to live a normal happy childhood. This book should be a wake-up call for many, especially ones working with young children. My only question is, What could have been done to not only save the children but also the life of Mr. Richards and his family? This would make a very educational and exciting movie.

Terrifying and realistic... couldn't put it down.
This is an extremely well-written book that should be required reading for everyone, but especially anyone that works with children. I work in a public school and have seen first-hand how a person can be put through sheer torture simply on the words of a child, despite being totally innocent. The events in this book happen more often than we realize. It is sad when you have to be afraid to hug or show any affection toward a child. This book shows the horrors that evil people inflict on our children and yet manage to remain free. It is impossible to put down and reading it sent chills up my spine. The authors made me feel as though I were actually walking in Joseph's shoes. I can't wait to see it made into a movie.

Heartwrenching and scary, because it really could happen
There is such sadness and evil in this book. How Joseph Richards and his family survive the onslaught upon them is beyond my comprehension. The ending left me weak and stunned. How tragic. The girls who were used and manipulated were left at the mercy of the ones who abused them because the system allowed itself to be used to go after an innocent man. This makes me wonder how we have arrived at the place where a man's constitutional rights can be suspended like this, just because kids are involved. But it is clear from what we hear on the news all the time that such things can happen, and do happen. To use protecting a child as an excuse to convict the wrong man, and in so doing allow the real offenders to escape unpunished and free to keep misusing children is just wrong. I will recommend that any man I know who deals with kids read this book to see what jeopardy they are in. This was a wake up call for me. Even as a woman I feel endangered by this mania that makes this kind of charge tantamount to a conviction. This puts too much power in the hands of those who can benefit from making these kinds of accusations. The media loves this kind of story, and I feel guilty for all the times I have heard such stories and just took them at face value. I never questioning the motives of those who brought the charges in the first place. I am sure that often the charges are true, but am also sure that often they are not. When we nail the wrong guy, the kids are left at the mercy of the real molester. This obviously means that in this kind of case we need to go back to using the traditional rights, checks and balances the law provides for those accused of other kinds of crimes, because only by finding the real criminals do we protect the kids. This book needs to be made into a movie, because there are just not enough people who will read this story to make a difference in how things are done. It is sad that so many won't read this. The story could not have been better told. I could not put the book down, though the terrible truth of it terrified me all the way through. As it rushed towards its inevitable conclusion it just made me sick not to be able to do anything to stop it. At the Hands of a Child is surely worth your money and your time.

Best of Newspaper Design: 22nd Edition
Published in Hardcover by Rockport Publishers (October, 2001)
Authors: Society for News Design and C. Marshall Matlock
Average review score:

variety of concepts
This is quite an interesting guide for those seeking for innovation in newspaper design. What makes it so interesting is the fact that it's assembled with pages and pages of newspaper desing around the world.
Good choise if browing for a change in your paper.

The World's Best Newspapers are in this Book.
I bought this book because I wanted to see the world's best newspaper designs. What I got is more than expected. Now I know what makes best newspapers. It's a combination of a lot of things. There are lessons to be learnt although the book is not a manual. Newspaper designers, editors, photographers and art directors better work together hand in hand to produce the highest quality newspaper or else.... I found that european newspapers are superb in the combination of news, art and design. What more can you ask if they can blend them so well in a newspaper. The American newspapers fares equally well with a combination of news and photos. For the Asian and the Pacific,... they had better catch up.

Essential for any journalist or designer's bookshelf.
What's the matter with newspapers these days? Not enough creativity, put simply. blah, blah, blah. this is THE book that will get those creative juices going from the very first glance. Gorgeous format photography (the eager and well-sighted can even read the articles) encompassing designs from around the globe, gloss paper and well written guidelines consolidate a book that is a pleasure to view and a pride to own. In previous years I have found it is not wise to lend - it takes ages to get the blessed book back!! A genuine and completely worthy investment, and absolutely recommended.

The Year of the Buffalo: A Novel of Love & Minor League Baseball
Published in Paperback by Savage Press (May, 2001)
Authors: Marshall J. Cook and Michael P. Savage
Average review score:

If you liked the movie "Bull Durham," you'll like this book.
I'm a female who has no interest in sports, so you wouldn't think this book would appeal to me. However, I love a good yarn about a group of memorable, loveable people pulling together to save their team and their town, and searching for love in its many forms along the way, and this book was that. But baseball fans would love it, too. I hear the author has written a sequel. I will be among the first in line to read about the ongoing lives of Tommy Lee, Dutch, the Chief, Billie Jo, and my personal favorite, Bruce Kelly, the wise and caring newspaperman.

A masterfully written story!
In this delightful tale Cook takes us deep into the heart and soul of small-town U.S.A., its residents and its minor league baseball team, the Buffalo. "The Year of the Buffalo" is a wonderful read--and not just for baseball fans. Cooks tremendous insight into people, love of baseball and mastery of the written word will grab your attention and keep you turning the pages! You will find yourself walking the streets of Beymer, having breakfast at the diner and rooting in the stands.

I couldn't put it down!
This small volume grabs you from the opening (a minor leaguer's unexpected entry into Beymer) and holds you till the exciting conclusion (I'll never tell!). It is a very warm and human tale set against the backdrop of America's Game in a small town that could be anywhere. I would truthfully recommend this read (and do) even if Marshall were not my younger brother
